WASHINGTON (AP)
The Catholic Archdiocese of Washington is threatening to stop providing some social services unless lawmakers change a proposal to legalize same-sex marriages.

The city council has refused to change the measure, which is expected to pass next month.

The church says the marriage bill would force the church to offer employee benefits and adoptions to married same-sex couples. But council members say threats shouldn't determine D.C. laws.

Council member Jim Graham says the church hasn't abandoned social services in New Hampshire, Connecticut or Vermont after they began same-sex marriages.

MEMPHIS (AP)
Memphis police have arrested two men for what began as vandalism and ended in a fight with officers.

A news release from the department said plain clothes officers watched two men in front of the Gay and Lesbian Community Center on Wednesday as one of them set fire to the rope on a flag pole.

When the officers intervened, the department said the men began fighting with them and one tried to disarm an officer.

The suspects fled, but responding officers found one of them a short time later. He was identified as 23-year-old Ross Burton.

Former megachurch pastor Ted Haggard held a prayer meeting at his home Thursday evening, saying the living room event was the beginning of his resurrection three years after he was forced to resign amid a sex scandal involving a male prostitute.

Wearing blue jeans and a gray T-shirt, Haggard spoke to photographers and reporters before the prayer meeting at his home in Colorado Springs. Almost 25 years ago, he had led about two dozen people in prayer from his home and founded New Life Church, eventually becoming an evangelical superstar.
