After a whirlwind tour through the festival circuit, with stops at Sundance and Outfest, Dare finally arrives in theaters this weekend. And you should see it. Not only because there's a hot man-on-man pool scene between Friday Nigh Light's Zach Gilford and newcomer Ashley Springer. And not just because Duncan Sheik scored the thing. And [...]

Massachusetts Transgender Political Coalition has the details, including links to the poll and Lake research Partners' analysis of the poll.  But first, Bay Staters need to take action with the help of this email from MassEquality sent out Thursday.  Time is short.
A poll just released by Lake Research Partners shows that 76% of likely voters in Massachusetts, including 81% of women, support H1728--An Act Relative to Gender-Based Discrimination and Hate Crimes. These results prove what we knew all along: ending harmful discrimination against the transgender community is a Massachusetts value that state legislators need to make a priority.

With only five days to go before the state legislature adjourns for the year, now is the time to take action and help us push for passage of this important bill.  Right now, H1728 is being held in the Judiciary Committee, with no set date to be released for a full vote in the legislature.

Please send an email to your State Representative now urging them to contact Speaker DeLeo to make the Transgender Rights Bill a priority.  Although a majority of state legislators have already voiced their own support for transgender equality, we need them to weigh in with Speaker DeLeo to help move the bill in the current legislative session.

Just CLICK HERE and we'll help you send that email to your legislators.

Thank you,

Scott D. Gortikov
Executive Director

City of Seattle * City Council

PROCLAMATION

IN RECOGNITION OF THE APPROVAL OF REFERENDUM 71 GRANTING EQUAL RIGHTS TO DOMESTIC PARTNERS

Whereas, civil rights and liberties have long been values of the City of Seattle; and

Whereas, the Seattle City Council recognized the importance of extended domestic partnership laws by endorsing the Approve Referendum 71 Campaign; and

Whereas, equality for all Seattle families has a lasting, powerful effect on the city; and

Whereas, the LGBT community is an important and integral part of what makes the City of Seattle a vibrant place to live, work, and play; and

Whereas, the historic vote to approve Referendum 71 sends a message to the rest of the country that the rights and responsibilities afforded to heterosexual married couples are now available to same-sex domestic partners registered with Washington State, and provides important protections to all Washington families; and

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED THAT THE SEATTLE CITY COUNCIL DECLARES NOVEMBER 14, 2009 TO BE VICTORY, REFERENDUM 71 APPROVED DAY IN THE CITY OF SEATTLE.

Approve 71 Thank You Rally Saturday, November 14, from 12:00 PM - 1:30 PM, at Westlake Center Park in Seattle.  Details after the flip.
Approve 71 Thank You Rally, Saturday at Westlake Center

A group of students, volunteers, and community members have organized an Approve 71 Thank You Rally in celebration of  the November 3 victory for all Washington families. The event is on Saturday, November 14, from 12:00 PM - 1:30 PM, at Westlake Center Park in Seattle.

Anne Levison and Josh Friedes will speak on behalf of the Approve 71 Campaign. Lt. Dan Choi will give a keynote address, followed by other respected members of the community.

The community is eager to thank fair minded Washington voters and volunteers for their outpouring of support during the unusually short six week campaign.

Hundreds of volunteers called hundreds of thousands of voters at phone banks. They organized fundraisers, sign waving visibility events, house parties and more.

Because of this dedication to equality, Washington State made history on November 3. It was the first state  to ever approve an expansion of LGBT equality at the ballot.

The domestic partnership expansion bill will go into effect on December 3, 2009. Once it does, same-sex couples will have access to all the same state rights and responsibilities as married couples.

¡Felicitaciones Argentina!
Judge Gabriela Seijas ordered the civil registry to make official the marriage of Alejandro Freyre, 39, and Jose Maria Di Bello, 41, who had been denied their request because they were both men.

It could increase pressure for lawmakers to take up a stalled gay marriage bill in Congress.

"We are very happy, moved, but we also feel the heavy weight of responsibility because it's not just about us, it's encouraging legal equality in Argentina and the rest of Latin America," Di Bello told Agence France-Presse.

The couple had filed a complaint in April. ...

The decision by Seijas "is incredibly courageous, we didn't expect it," acknowledged Di Bello, who fell into his partner's arms when he learned of the verdict.

Of course judicial decisions can be appealed, but not to worry.
The government of the City of Buenos Aires said it would not appeal a ruling that would pave the way for same-sex marriages in the capital.

Through a statement published on the Internet, City Mayor Mauricio Macri said "this is an important step, because we must learn how to live in freedom without hurting the rights of others.... We must cohabit, and accept this reality. The world is heading toward that direction"

Macri added that the decision was the result "of an important internal debate," through which he wanted to "improve the liberties" of the citizens. ...

The ruling of Administrative Judge Gabriela Seijas, said "the law should treat everybody with the same respect, regardless of their singularities, without the need to understanding and regulating them."

The couple said they were "proud and happy" for being "the first same-sex couple who have been backed by the courts," in a ruling that came only days after the Lower House of Congress failed to reach quorum on a law draft to allow homosexual marriages in the country. The law, which would be debated next year, would make Argentina the first country in the region to legalize same-sex marriages

We are 11 days away from the November Election. The Portland, Maine office is humming with volunteer activity. Every day, volunteers drop off food provisions for all the other volunteers. The first day we had homemade chili, yesterday egg salad sandwiches, and this morning someone brought in some carrots from their own yare first day we had homemade chili, yesterday egg salad sandwiches, and this morning someone brought in some carrots from their own yard. Mainers are chipping in any way they can. My time has been spent in the office working in the communications department while Travis Prinslow and Meleanie Altaras have been adopted into the Data and Campus Outreach departments. We work 9 to 9, when we're lucky and have been working on a variety of projects. From confirming volunteers, to getting people to vote early and in person volunteer recruitment. The amount of work that goes into a campaign is astounding. You walk into any office and you hear typing, people on the phone, stapling, paper shuffling and people being directed. It's a small preview of what Oregon will be dealing with soon enough. However, Oregon's fight will be much larger-- Maine's population is a third the size of Oregon's. I'm grateful that Basic Rights Oregon is starting early and getting all our ducks in a row before we enter our own fight. Maine's latest YouTube celebrity goes by the name of Phillip Spooner. Mr. Spooner is 85 years old, a WWII vet, and a lifelong republicanâ€"he is also in favor of marriage equality. Click here to watch his testimony in April during the Marriage hearings. His video has officially gone viral, with close to 500,000 views. Mainers are excited to have someone like Mr. Spooner speaking up for equality, so much so that he has unofficially become the face of the campaign. Click here to watch a segment of Mr. Spooner being interviewed about his views on Marriage Equality. The opposition is using children to scare voters into voting against equality. They are running ads claiming that "gay sex education" will be taught in schools. Fortunately, the Maine campaign has been very diligent about countering their ads and has caused a stir by featuring a French catholic woman who supports her son's right to get married. Yolande Dumont is also a Maine celebrity and has inspired Catholics and other religious denominations to come out and support the No on 1 campaign. Of course the Catholic DIoces is bankrolling the opposition's campaign along with National Organization marriage and Shubert Flint of prop 8 fame. When Yolande first came on the airwaves the Catholic Diocese was up in arms and started to spend resources countering Yolande's message. This is exciting because the opposition is now on the defensive. Not only do they have to counter multiple legislators, and educators on the whole "Teaching gay in Schools" issue, now they have to make sure that other fair minded Catholics reject Yolande's message. If the No on 1 Campaign wins on Election Day it will be a model on how to defeat the oppositions' vitriol and lies. Although, Maine is literally the farthest place from Oregon in the country, their efforts will have a huge impact on our work. They need all the help they can get. If you have not donated to the NO on 1 campaign you can do so by clicking here. If you cannot afford a donation but have some extra time on your hands you can phone bank from Oregon with their Call for Equality Program sign up here. I'm going to get back to work now but feel free to shoot me an email if you have any questions about getting involved in the Maine campaign.
