Cuba will reinstate sex-change operations previously banned on the island, President Raul Castro's daughter Mariela said Wednesday.

The Health Ministry authorized the operations last year, but none has been performed since. It was unclear when the surgeries would begin.

Mariela Castro, a sexologist and gay-rights advocate, announced the return of sex-change procedures in comments aired on state television. She runs the Center for Sex Education, which prepares transsexuals for sex-change operations and has identified 19 transsexuals it deems ready to undergo the procedure.

Liberty University has told its fledgling College Democrats club it can no longer be a campus group, saying the party stands against the conservative Christian school's moral principles.

Club president Brian Diaz said he was shocked to get the notice from the private university in Lynchburg, Va., founded by the late Rev. Jerry Falwell. The university first recognized the group in the fa ll.

"We were shocked, as well, that (the club) even got accepted. It was huge, and we were glad that Liberty did that," Diaz said.

BOSTON (AP)
A man has pleaded guilty to attacking three gay men and their female friend as they walked in Boston's South End, but he has avoided prison.

Fabio Brandao of Framingham, Mass., on Wednesday admitted kicking and hitting the men while using homophobic slurs during the beating last August. Three other attackers have never been identified.

The 29-year-old Brandao received a two-year suspended sentence and won't spend time in prison if he follows terms set by a Boston Municipal Court judge, including alcohol counseling and paying the victims' medical bills.

Brandao's attorney, Francis Doran, declined comment.
