Untold thousands — as expected — turned out for Sunday’s mammoth “We Are One” concert, the official kick-off to this week’s inauguration festivities for U.S. President-elect Barack Obama.
Dozens of powerhouse singers and household-name actors appeared in a tightly paced two-hour show that was telecast live on HBO. It’s impossible to say how many attended (400,000 are estimated) but the crowd stretched from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, where the performances occurred, down the Mall to the Washington Monument.

A Republican political action committee says it's organizing a grassroots effort to defeat a gay marriage bill that's just been introduced.
The Maine Republican Project is opposing a bill to repeal the "Defense of Marriage Act," which defines marriage as between a man and a woman. Democratic Sen. Dennis Damon's bill seeks to repeal that act and allow "two persons" to marry.
