President-elect Barack Obama has asked gay physician Mark Dybul to remain in his job as U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator for an undetermined period of time, according to an e-mail message Dybul sent to his staff on Jan. 9.

Dybul, who holds the rank of a U.S. ambassador, became one of President Bush?s highest ranking gay appointees in 2006, when Bush named him as acting ? and five months later as permanent ? head of the Global AIDS office.

Several dozen gay and lesbian activists gathered at the state Capitol Monday to discuss plans to protest the appearance of Rev. Rick Warren at Ebenezer Baptist Church on Jan. 19 as part of Martin Luther King Day festivities. The protest will take place at 9 a.m. at the corner of Jackson Street and Auburn Avenue, across from the church.

Georgia's legislative session got underway today as lawmakers began to jostle about crowded halls looking for support for their own agendas.

State Supreme Court Chief Justice Justice Leah Ward Sears led the members of the House of Representatives in their oath of office. Among the 180 members was Rep. Karla Drenner (D-Avondale Estates), the only openly gay person in Georgia’s legislature, who took her vow to serveher fifth term.

On the other side of the Capitol, Sen. Nan Orrock (D-Midtown) took her oath next to Sen. Kaseem Reed (D-Atlanta), who is leaving the Senate after this session to focus on his run for mayor.
