Local gay chorus to sing at inaugural event

A local gay men?s chorus has been invited to perform as part of President-elect Barack Obama?s inauguration ceremonies next week, according to a statement from the group.

The Gay Men?s Chorus of Washington will perform during a pre-inauguration event Sunday that will take place from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Lincoln Memorial. Among the 800,000 attendees expected at the concert are Obama and Vice President-elect Joe Biden, the statement says.

Taunee Grant, a chorus spokesperson, said HBO, which will broadcast the performance live, tapped the group to sing at the concert.

The Episcopal Diocese of Colorado is ending its so-called "period of restraint" on ordaining gay priests.

Bishop Robert O'Neill ordained Mary Catherine Volland to the priesthood during a ceremony at St. John's Cathedral on Saturday.

Volland, a longtime Colorado resident and partnered lesbian, had been a candidate for ordination in the Diocese of Minnesota. She will serve at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Denver.

New Hampshire Episcopal Bishop Gene Robinson will give a prayer at the Lincoln Memorial for 1 of President-elect Barack Obama's first inauguration events.

Robinson, the first openly gay Episcopal bishop, will participate in an event Sunday to kickoff inauguration festivities. His selection follows weeks of criticism from gay-rights groups over Obama's decision to have the Rev. Rick Warren give the invocation at his Jan. 20 inauguration.
